Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of early Baroque music with Johann Hermann Schein's "Israelsbrünnlein," a masterful collection of sacred concertos released in 2001 by Carus. This album, spanning a little over an hour, showcases Schein's intricate compositions, blending the spiritual depth of Lutheran hymns with the vibrant energy of the early 17th century.

Performed by the Dresdner Kammerchor and an ensemble of talented musicians including Christine Hesse on the organ, Friedhelm Rentzsch and Jarek Thiel on cellos, Michael Dücker on the theorbo, and Stefan Maass on the lute, this recording brings to life the polyphonic beauty and emotional resonance of Schein's work. The album features 21 tracks, each a testament to Schein's mastery of vocal and instrumental composition.

From the contemplative "O Herr, ich bin dein Knecht" to the jubilant "Nu danket alle Gott," this album offers a comprehensive journey through Schein's "Israelsbrünnlein." Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast of early music or a newcomer eager to explore the Baroque period, this album provides a captivating introduction to one of the most influential composers of the era.

About Johann Hermann Schein

Johann Hermann Schein, born in Grünhain, Germany, in 1586, was a pioneering figure in the early Baroque era, renowned for his significant contributions to both sacred and secular music. As the Thomaskantor in Leipzig from 1615 until his death in 1630, Schein played a crucial role in shaping the musical landscape of his time. Alongside contemporaries like Heinrich Schütz and Michael Praetorius, he was one of the first to introduce the Italian Baroque style into German music, leaving a lasting impact on the region's musical heritage. Schein's compositions, particularly his sacred works, continue to be celebrated for their innovation and beauty, making him a key figure in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque period.
