Product description

Indulge in the timeless elegance of Mel Tormé's "It's a Blue World," a 2015 remastered collection of his 1955 classic. This album is a testament to Tormé's vocal prowess and his mastery of the jazz and big band genres. With a career that initially saw him pigeonholed as a pop singer, Tormé found his true calling with Bethlehem Records, who recognized his potential as a jazz virtuoso.

"It's a Blue World" features twelve beautifully remastered tracks, each showcasing Tormé's velvety voice and impeccable phrasing. From the sultry "I've Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)" to the whimsical "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," this album is a journey through the golden age of vocal jazz. Tormé's rendition of "How Long Has This Been Going On" is particularly noteworthy, highlighting his ability to infuse a song with both intimacy and grandeur.

The album's duration of 42 minutes is a perfect length for a relaxed evening, offering a blend of classic standards and lesser-known gems. Whether you're a longtime fan of Mel Tormé or a newcomer to his music, "It's a Blue World" is an essential addition to any music collection. The remastering process has ensured that the audio quality is pristine, allowing Tormé's voice to shine as brightly as it did over six decades ago.

This is a 2017 Limited Edition Reissue Remastered released as a LP.

  • Mel Torme's Best Album Version

    5 out of 5 stars
    27nwluwpjvaonDecember 6, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

This is an amazing album and one of my top picks from Mel Torme. If you're searching for the finest version of this album, I've personally compared three different versions: the Original Bethlehem from 1955, the reissue Bethlehem from 1984, and the Del Ray Records from 2017. Both Bethlehem versions sounded nearly identical, except the 1955 had much more surface noise due to its VG/VG+ condition. Even an M- might have more noise because of age issues. The 1984 version in M- condition was almost noiseless, with only very faint occasional pops and crackles, making it my personal favorite. The Bethlehem's sound warm with a sweet tone, and the instruments are more articulate. The Del Ray from 2017 had more mid-treble boost and dryer-sounding instruments but was completely noiseless. The difference between Bethlehem and Del Ray is subtle, not night and day, but noticeable. I'd be happy to own any of these versions, but if I had to pick the best, it would be the Bethlehem Records BCP 34 (1984) US. Other differences include the record thickness, with both 1955 and 2017 being about 180g and the 1984 being about 100g, making it feel more delicate. The 1955 also has a much thicker cover jacket compared to the others. The picture on the 1955 jacket is the best, with a faint blue tint on a grayish picture of the sand and sea. The 1984 boosted the contrast and color, looking very grainy (probably to make it more attention-grabbing compared to the soft original picture), and the 2017 isn't really blue, it's more greenish grey. So, the best packaging and cover is the original. If you can find the original in pristine condition, it might be the best, but the 1984 reissue is really fantastic. If anyone knows of a better version, let me know. Thanks!

  • Mel Torme's Best Edition

Fantastic album, one of my all-time favorites by Mel Torme! If you're hunting for the top version of this album, I've personally compared three editions: the Original Bethlehem (1955), the reissue Bethlehem (1984), and the Del Ray Records (2017). The two Bethlehem versions sounded nearly identical, except the 1955 had way more surface noise due to its VG/VG+ condition, though even a mint copy might have some age-related noise. The 1984 version in M- condition was almost noise-free, with just the occasional faint pop and crackle. In my opinion, it's the best version out there. The Bethlehem versions have a warm, sweet tone with more articulate instruments. The Del Ray (2017) is a bit mid-treble boosted and has drier instruments, but it's completely noiseless. The difference between Bethlehem and Del Ray is subtle, not night and day, but noticeable. I'd be happy with any of these versions, but if I had to pick the best, it'd be the Bethlehem Records BCP 34 (1984) US. Other differences include record thickness, with both the 1955 and 2017 being around 180g, while the 1984 is about 100g, making it feel more delicate. The 1955 also has a much thicker cover jacket compared to the others. The jacket picture from 1955 is the best, with a faint blue tint on a grayish sand and sea image. The 1984 version boosted the contrast and color, looking quite grainy (probably to make it more eye-catching than the soft original), and the 2017 isn't really blue, more greenish-grey. So, the best packaging and cover is the original. If you can find the original in pristine condition, it might be the best, but the 1984 reissue is truly fantastic. If anyone knows of a better version, let me know. Thanks!

  • Mel Sounds Amazing on Setup

Wow, Mel Sounds Amazing! As I've only experienced digital versions, I can't compare, but it's fantastic on my setup. No problems with noise or distortion, it's incredibly quiet, and the instruments and vocals sound incredibly natural and pleasant. I'm astonished there's no premium audiophile edition of this album—it's a classic in my book, and I'm thrilled to have a great copy. Fingers crossed for an even better remaster in the future.
