Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Isang Yun's "Double Concerto & Images," a 1985 release that showcases the brilliance of this Korean-born, Germany-based composer. This album is a testament to Yun's unique ability to blend Eastern and Western musical traditions, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply expressive.

The album features two remarkable works: the "Double Concerto for Oboe and Harp with Small Orchestra" and "Images for Flute, Oboe, Violin and Violoncello." The Double Concerto, a standout piece in Yun's repertoire, is a dynamic interplay between the oboe, harp, and a small orchestra, showcasing the composer's mastery of instrumental textures and his ability to create a rich, immersive soundscape. The "Images" suite, on the other hand, is a more intimate exploration of the interplay between the flute, oboe, violin, and cello, offering a different facet of Yun's compositional genius.

Performed by renowned musicians Heinz Holliger, Ursula Holliger, and Dennis Russell Davies, this album is a treat for classical music enthusiasts. The performances are nuanced and powerful, bringing out the full depth and complexity of Yun's compositions. The album's duration of 55 minutes makes it a perfect choice for a focused listening session, offering a complete experience of Yun's musical vision.

Isang Yun, born Yun I-sang, was a prolific composer known for his unique style that often incorporated traditional Korean elements into Western classical forms. His works, including this album, have been widely performed and celebrated for their emotional depth and technical brilliance. "Double Concerto & Images" is a shining example of Yun's ability to create music that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

About Isang Yun

Isang Yun, born Yun I-sang, was a pioneering composer who bridged the musical traditions of East and West with remarkable finesse. Born in Tongyong, Korea, in 1917, Yun's early life was marked by his active resistance against the Japanese occupation. His musical journey took him to Japan and Korea for his studies, but it was in West Germany that he forged his later career, becoming the first composer from Eastern Asia to establish an international presence there.

Yun's compositions are a unique fusion of Asian philosophy, aesthetics, and musical styles with Western avant-garde techniques. His work is not just a blend but a synthesis, creating a distinct sound that is both familiar and innovative. Throughout his career, Yun was uncompromising in his artistic vision and his personal beliefs, holding fast to his dream of a united Korea. His influence extended beyond his music, encouraging contemporary music scenes in both North and South Korea.

Yun's legacy continues to inspire, commemorated through events like the ISANGYUN Competition in his birthplace of Tongyeong. His compositions invite listeners to explore the depths of his artistic vision, making him a seminal figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
