Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Isang Yun, a Korean-born composer who spent much of his career in West Germany, with his intriguing album "Yun: Concertino, Duo, Intermezzo, Pezzo fantasioso." Released on October 21, 2011, under the Wergo label, this album is a testament to Yun's unique musical language and innovative compositions.

The album features four distinct pieces, each showcasing Yun's ability to blend traditional Korean influences with Western classical music. The Concertino, a piece for solo instrument and orchestra, is a testament to Yun's mastery of form and structure. The Duo, written for two instruments, is a study in contrast and harmony, while the Intermezzo, a piece for cello and accordion, is a delightful exploration of rhythm and melody.

The Pezzo fantasioso, a piece for two instruments with bass ad libitum, is a highlight of the album. Written in 1988, it is a testament to Yun's ability to create music that is both imaginative and deeply moving. The piece had its world premiere on May 7, 2011, at the St. Matthäus-Kirche in Berlin, Germany.

The album is performed by the Minguet Quartett and Stefan Hussong, who bring Yun's compositions to life with their skillful playing and deep understanding of his musical style. The album's duration is 52 minutes, making it a perfect listen for those seeking a brief but immersive musical experience.

Isang Yun's "Yun: Concertino, Duo, Intermezzo, Pezzo fantasioso" is not just an album, but a journey into the mind of a composer who was ahead of his time. It is a must-listen for anyone interested in exploring the intersection of traditional and contemporary music.

About Isang Yun

Isang Yun, born Yun I-sang, was a pioneering composer who bridged the musical traditions of East and West with remarkable finesse. Born in Tongyong, Korea, in 1917, Yun's early life was marked by his active resistance against the Japanese occupation. His musical journey took him to Japan and Korea for his studies, but it was in West Germany that he forged his later career, becoming the first composer from Eastern Asia to establish an international presence there.

Yun's compositions are a unique fusion of Asian philosophy, aesthetics, and musical styles with Western avant-garde techniques. His work is not just a blend but a synthesis, creating a distinct sound that is both familiar and innovative. Throughout his career, Yun was uncompromising in his artistic vision and his personal beliefs, holding fast to his dream of a united Korea. His influence extended beyond his music, encouraging contemporary music scenes in both North and South Korea.

Yun's legacy continues to inspire, commemorated through events like the ISANGYUN Competition in his birthplace of Tongyeong. His compositions invite listeners to explore the depths of his artistic vision, making him a seminal figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
