The sound quality of my copy is absolutely amazing. It's a stellar album that really highlights the farthest reaches of sound engineering.
An amazing journey in beats & sound! So awesome!!!
Amon Tobin is reshaping what fans anticipate from his music, delivering his most captivating work since the brilliant trilogy of the '90s (Bricolage, Permutation, Supermodified). While the intricate drum-based rhythms seem to have taken a backseat (though they're still present if you pay close attention to the rhythmic arrangement of his sounds), the emphasis is now on the layering of the most peculiar samples and meticulously crafted sound design, reminiscent of a "foley room" approach. This album exudes a more laid-back and sultry vibe, even flirting with folk-pop at times (though still infused with Tobin's signature love for sound manipulation and tweaked samples). His mastery of composition and organization of the sonic chaos he creates remains unparalleled, and the production is flawless. A refreshing evolution from one of the most intriguing musicians of the sample era.

What's the issue with this album? Fans of Tobin should relax about this release. It's stunning work, no matter who made it, clearly a master at their trade – in both creation and performance – so what's the fuss? I don't get it. This album can be described in one word. That word is self-assured. And if Tobin loses some fans for being true to himself, so what. I can appreciate the confidence to create something for yourself. It's not always about the listeners. Actually, genuine art doesn't cater to a demanding crowd, it usually just appears and has instant worth just by being – this album could easily serve that purpose. There's such a playful, almost mischievous charm to the absurdity of sound snippets used to build beats and set structure, which in no way limits the output of creativity and thoughtful effort that went into the whole production. This album might feel sparse, perhaps. But compared to what? Earlier Tobin stuff? Who cares. Personal growth happens when someone knows there are no boundaries to what they can achieve. Right here, right now, this is the polish we've been anticipating -- Amon Tobin couldn't have made his mark at a better time. Pure joy during tough times.
