Product description

Immerse yourself in the rich, orchestral world of Howard Hanson with the album "Hanson: Merry Mount Suite & Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2." Released on June 7, 2019, under Biddulph Recordings, this collection showcases Hanson's mastery of classical composition, blending his distinctive American style with European influences.

The album features two complete symphonies and the Merry Mount Suite, offering a comprehensive journey through Hanson's early works. The Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 21, nicknamed "Nordic," opens with a powerful Andante solenne leading into an Allegro con forza, setting the stage for a dramatic and evocative experience. The second movement, Andante teneramente, con semplicità, provides a tender contrast, while the Finale. Allegro con fuoco brings the symphony to a thrilling close.

The Merry Mount Suite, inspired by Hanson's opera of the same name, is a delightful exploration of light and playful themes. The suite includes the Overture, Children's Dance, Love Duet, Prelude, and Maypole Dances, each piece brimming with charm and musical ingenuity.

The Symphony No. 2 in D-Flat Major, Op. 30, continues the album with its Adagio introduction leading into an Allegro moderato. The second movement, Andante con tenerezza, is a heartfelt and lyrical interlude, while the final movement, Allegro con brio, concludes the symphony with energy and vitality.

Performed by the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra under Hanson's direction, this album captures the essence of his compositions with precision and passion. Whether you're a seasoned classical enthusiast or new to Hanson's work, this album offers a captivating exploration of one of America's most influential composers.
