Product description

"Greetings and Salutations" is a captivating big band jazz album that showcases the brilliance of Thad Jones, a renowned cornetist and arranger, alongside the legendary drummer Mel Lewis and the talented Jon Faddis. Recorded in 1975 with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group, this album is a testament to the rich fusion of American jazz prowess and Swedish musical finesse.

The album, released under the Four Leaf Clover Records label, features eight tracks that span a full hour of pure, unadulterated jazz magic. From the lively "61st and Rich'It" to the soulful "The Waltz You Swang for Me," each composition is a masterclass in big band and hard bop genres, seamlessly blending bebop elements with a touch of Swedish charm.

Thad Jones' compositions, including the title track "Greetings and Salutations," are intricate and dynamic, highlighting the exceptional skill of the musicians involved. The album's standout tracks, such as "Mach 2" and "Rhodas Map," demonstrate the band's ability to deliver both high-energy performances and more introspective, melodic pieces.

About Thad Jones

Thad Jones, born in Pontiac, Michigan, was a titan of jazz, renowned for his virtuosity on the trumpet and his innovative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from a musical family that included brothers Hank Jones (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums), Thad Jones began his professional career at the tender age of 16 and served in U.S. Army bands during World War II. Throughout his illustrious career, Jones played with jazz legends such as Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, and Gil Evans, and led his own big band, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, which redefined the sound of modern jazz. His compositions, including the iconic "A Child is Born," are staples of the genre, showcasing his unique blend of hard bop and big band styles. Jones' influence extended beyond his music; he was also one of the first prominent jazz musicians to hold a full-time professorship, teaching at William Paterson University. His legacy as a trumpeter, composer, and bandleader continues to inspire musicians and captivate audiences worldwide.
