Got to Find a Way - Curtis Mayfield

Product description

Dive into the soulful sounds of Curtis Mayfield's "Got to Find a Way," a 1974 gem that showcases the legendary artist's prowess in blending soul, funk, and Motown influences. This sixth studio album, originally released under Curtom Records, is a testament to Mayfield's ability to craft timeless music that resonates with depth and authenticity.

"Got to Find a Way" features six captivating tracks, each penned by Mayfield himself, offering a rich tapestry of musical expression. The album opens with the sultry, seductive funk of "Love Me (Right in the Pocket)," setting the tone for a journey through love, loss, and reflection. Standout tracks like "So You Don't Love Me" and "A Prayer" highlight Mayfield's knack for creating warm, heartfelt ballads that tug at the heartstrings.

The album's minimal, introverted sound, achieved with the help of a talented ensemble including arranger Richard Tufo and a veteran rhythm section, provides a unique listening experience. Despite its more subdued approach, "Got to Find a Way" boasts a powerful presence, reaching number 76 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 17 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

With its earthy funk and sweet Chicago soul, "Got to Find a Way" is a quintessential Curtis Mayfield album, showcasing his enduring talent and innovative spirit. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to captivate with its timeless appeal and unmistakable charm.

This 2002 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Curtis Mayfield's Funk Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    GyolsDecember 4, 2025United States🇺🇸

Back in the early '80s, you could snag copies of this and other Curtis Mayfield albums for a song. I grabbed this one for around 50p in 1982 and picked up Short Eyes for just 25p. Albums like There's No Place Like America Today, Back To The World, Roots, and even Superfly, I got for less than a quid each. The reason was simple—nobody was interested back then, just before sampling became a big deal. Curtis and James Brown were the unsung heroes of funk... and by the late '70s/early '80s, they'd gotten tangled up in the disco craze, which kinda ruined their rep. It was even before the Rare Groove revival brought funk back in the mid '80s.This album, 'Got To Find A Way,' has to be one of CM's best. The grooves are raw, stripped-down funk, so pure. Unbelievable quality. I was lucky enough to catch Curtis around 1983—great memories.

  • Vincent Overlooks Essential Funk Album

    4 out of 5 stars
    Jusa4224June 25, 2025United States🇺🇸

It's disappointing that in his otherwise well-researched book «Funk», Ricky Vincent overlooks this album (ess. Funk albums, last pages). Also, there's a rainbow on the cover, but sorry, this isn't relevant to current events. In the Bible, the rainbow symbolized the covenant between humanity and God.

I couldn't find my copy on the list, so I clicked "Your version not on Discogs? Add a release." Now it's showing up as a separate release under Curtis Mayfield, and I can't delete it. It took a lot of effort to input all the details...I'm not sure what to do now...GNUlars

Fantastic pressing and audio quality! Picked up this copy today, and it's sounding so crisp and clear – even better than many of the pressings you can find nowadays 😊
