Lately, I've become utterly captivated by Bill Frisell's recent Blue Note releases, which has led me to explore his earlier work with ECM and now his Nonesuch period. I'm convinced this album is his magnum opus. A high school teacher of mine used to call Frisell's style "punk jazz" because he's always been open to blending genres beyond jazz, collaborating with artists like Elvis Costello, Robert Quine, and Richard Hell's Voidoids. So, it's no surprise he'd create a jazz album with country undertones. I picked up a Near Mint copy from a local record shop after spotting it on Discogs, and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! The thick gatefold jacket reminds me of Blue Note's Tone Poet Series and Analogue Productions, and the cover art is breathtaking with gorgeous photos inside. Musically, it's an instant favorite of mine! This pressing is a prime example of why vinyl is superior—it sounds INCREDIBLE! I'll be using this as my demo record from now on!
