Franz Waxman Conducts, Vol. 1 - Lukas Foss

Product description

"Franz Waxman Conducts, Vol. 1" is a captivating collection of works by the esteemed composer and conductor Franz Waxman, featuring the brilliant Lukas Foss and the Los Angeles Festival Orchestra. Released on May 28, 2013, under the Naxos label, this album is a testament to Waxman's mastery of the avant-garde genre, offering a unique blend of classical and modern influences.

The album spans 47 minutes and includes six tracks, divided between two major works: the Sinfonietta and the Piano Concerto No. 2. The Sinfonietta, a three-movement piece, begins with "I. Lento - Allegro," setting a contemplative yet energetic tone. The second movement, "II. Klagelied: Lento," offers a poignant and reflective interlude, while the final movement, "III. Scherzo. Finale," brings the piece to a thrilling close. The Piano Concerto No. 2, performed with virtuosity by Lukas Foss, is equally compelling, with its three movements—"I. Allegro sostenuto," "II. Adagietto," and "III. Allegro vivace"—showcasing Waxman's dynamic range and innovative compositional style.

This album is a must-listen for fans of classical music and those interested in the avant-garde genre. The collaboration between Franz Waxman, Lukas Foss, and the Los Angeles Festival Orchestra results in a performance that is both technically impressive and deeply expressive. Whether you're a seasoned listener or new to Waxman's work, "Franz Waxman Conducts, Vol. 1" promises an engaging and enriching musical experience.

About Lukas Foss

Lukas Foss, born in Berlin in 1922, was a pioneering figure in American music, renowned for his versatility as a composer, pianist, and conductor. Arriving in the United States at the age of fifteen, Foss quickly made a name for himself as a prodigy, studying at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His early works are marked by a neoclassical style, blending controlled improvisation and chance procedures with twelve-tone techniques and serialism. Throughout his career, Foss was at the forefront of the American musical avant-garde, known for his innovative experiments with improvisation and aleatory music. His compositions reflect a unique fusion of strong classical training, a love for complex rhythms, and an infectious, dancelike energy. Foss's legacy is one of optimism and musical exploration, making him a beloved figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
