Product description

Dive into the innovative world of Lukas Foss with this captivating album, released on May 24, 2024, under the Naxos label. Celebrating the centennial of Foss's birth, this collection showcases four of his most compelling works, spanning a rich tapestry of avant-garde compositions that highlight his unique blend of classical and modern influences.

The album opens with "Ode," a piece that sets the tone for the journey ahead. The centerpiece, "Symphony No. 1 in G Major," is a lyrical and expansive work that demonstrates Foss's mastery of orchestral composition. This four-movement symphony is a testament to his ability to weave intricate melodies and harmonies into a cohesive and engaging whole.

"Renaissance Concerto" is another highlight, a four-movement work that reimagines Baroque and Renaissance music through a modern lens. This 20:24 minute composition is a fascinating exploration of historical styles, presented in a contemporary context.

Completing the collection are the "3 American Pieces," arranged for violin and orchestra. These pieces, including "Early Song," "Dedication," and "Composer's Holiday," offer a glimpse into Foss's ability to blend American musical traditions with his distinctive avant-garde style.

Performed by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of JoAnn Falletta, with soloists Amy Porter and Nikki Chooi, this album is a testament to Foss's enduring legacy. Whether you're a longtime fan of Lukas Foss or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a compelling introduction to the genius of one of the 20th century's most innovative composers. With a total runtime of 1 hour and 14 minutes, it's a journey through sound that you won't want to miss.

About Lukas Foss

Lukas Foss, born in Berlin in 1922, was a pioneering figure in American music, renowned for his versatility as a composer, pianist, and conductor. Arriving in the United States at the age of fifteen, Foss quickly made a name for himself as a prodigy, studying at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His early works are marked by a neoclassical style, blending controlled improvisation and chance procedures with twelve-tone techniques and serialism. Throughout his career, Foss was at the forefront of the American musical avant-garde, known for his innovative experiments with improvisation and aleatory music. His compositions reflect a unique fusion of strong classical training, a love for complex rhythms, and an infectious, dancelike energy. Foss's legacy is one of optimism and musical exploration, making him a beloved figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
