Product description

Johnny Griffin's 'Four Classic Albums' is a magnificent compilation that showcases the legendary saxophonist's incredible talent and versatility. Released on 3 August 2018 by AVID Jazz, this extensive collection spans 2 hours and 37 minutes, featuring a plethora of iconic tracks that embody the essence of hard bop, jazz, and bebop.

This album is a masterclass in jazz, with Griffin's soulful and intricate playing style taking centre stage. From the opening notes of 'Tickle Toe' and 'Save Your Love for Me' from the 'Tough Tenors' series, it's clear that Griffin is a force to be reckoned with. His interpretations of Thelonious Monk's classics, such as 'In Walked Bud', 'Well, You Needn't', and 'Round Midnight', are nothing short of breathtaking, demonstrating his deep understanding and respect for the legendary composer.

The 'Blues up and Down' series brings a sense of laid-back cool, with tracks like 'Camp Meeting', 'Blues up and Down', and 'Leapin' on Lenox' showcasing Griffin's ability to craft infectious, blues-infused grooves. Meanwhile, the 'Griff & Lock' series highlights his chemistry with collaborator Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, resulting in electrifying performances like 'Hey Lock!' and 'Midnight at Minton's'.

Throughout 'Four Classic Albums', Johnny Griffin's passion and dedication to his craft shine brightly, making this collection an absolute must-listen for fans of jazz and hard bop. With its impeccable musicianship, memorable melodies, and historic significance, this album is a testament to Griffin's enduring legacy as one of the greatest saxophonists in jazz history.

About Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin, affectionately known as "the Little Giant," was a powerhouse of jazz, renowned for his formidable technique and fiery performances. Born in Chicago in 1928, Griffin's career spanned over six decades, beginning in the mid-1940s and continuing until his passing in 2008. A pioneer of hard bop, Griffin's music is characterized by its complexity and harmonic richness, showcasing his remarkable ability to navigate intricate melodies with ease. His discography is vast, featuring notable collaborations with legends like Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Griffin's influence extended beyond the United States; after relocating to Europe in the 1960s, he became a beloved figure in the European jazz scene, particularly as a member of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. Griffin's legacy is celebrated not just for his technical prowess but also for the warmth and blues foundation that underpinned his playing, making him one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists.
