Product description

Lukas Foss, a versatile and innovative composer, presents a captivating collection of his solo piano works in "Foss: Works for Solo Piano." Released in 2005 under the Naxos label, this album spans a duration of 54 minutes and showcases 11 tracks that delve into the avant-garde genre. Foss's compositions, performed by the skilled pianist Scott Dunn, offer a unique blend of technical prowess and artistic expression.

The album opens with "Scherzo Ricercato," a piece that exemplifies Foss's ability to merge classical forms with modern sensibilities. "Passacaglia," composed in 1940, demonstrates his early mastery of the piano, while "Grotesque Dance" from 1938 adds a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the collection. "Prelude in D Major" and "Fantasy Rondo" further highlight Foss's versatility and his ability to create pieces that are both lyrical and virtuosic.

The "4 2-Part Inventions" series showcases Foss's inventive spirit, with each movement offering a distinct character and mood. From the contemplative "Introduction (Andante)" to the lively "Molto vivace," these inventions display Foss's ability to explore a wide range of emotions and styles within a structured form.

The album concludes with "For Lenny: Variation on 'New York, New York'" and "Solo," pieces that pay homage to Foss's influences and his own unique voice in the world of piano music. Whether you're a fan of avant-garde music or simply appreciate the beauty of the piano, "Foss: Works for Solo Piano" is a compelling exploration of one of the 20th century's most innovative composers.
