Product description

Dive into the rich, spiritual jazz sounds of McCoy Tyner's "Focal Point," a masterful 1976 release that stands as a testament to the pianist's enduring legacy. Recorded over four intense days in August 1976 and remixed at the prestigious Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, this album is a vibrant blend of post-bop, hard bop, and cool jazz, showcasing Tyner's unique voice in the jazz world.

"Focal Point" features six captivating tracks, each offering a glimpse into Tyner's innovative compositional style and virtuosic playing. The album kicks off with the evocative "Mes Trois Fils," followed by the playful "Parody" and the exotic "Indo-Serenade." "Mode For Dulcimer" introduces a unique texture, while "Departure" and "Theme For Nana" round out the collection with their introspective and uplifting melodies.

The album benefits from a stellar ensemble, including Gary Bartz on saxophone, Joe Ford on flute and alto saxophone, Ron Bridgewater on tenor saxophone, Charles Fambrough on bass, Eric Kamau Gravatt on drums, and Guilherme Franco on percussion. Their collective talent elevates Tyner's compositions, creating a cohesive and dynamic listening experience.

With a runtime of just over 40 minutes, "Focal Point" is a concise yet powerful exploration of Tyner's musical vision. Whether you're a longtime fan of McCoy Tyner or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a compelling introduction to his post-Coltrane spiritual jazz style, making it a valuable addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection.

This is a 1986 Repress released as a LP.

  • Jazz Mastery Shines

    5 out of 5 stars
    l2llc7nbJanuary 8, 2026United States🇺🇸

Fantastic album. It began a bit sluggish, making me question if I should resell it right away, but the band eventually came together and served up some truly outstanding jazz, perfect for an era that had seemingly moved on. Tyner's playing is so skilled at times that it almost feels mechanical, and the drumming is, frankly, out of this world. The Japanese pressing is incredibly quiet, placing it among the top tier in terms of audio quality.

  • Jazz Masterpiece with Top-Notch Sound

An outstanding album. It started off a bit slow, making me question if I should resell it right away, but the group eventually came together and served up fantastic, if not exceptional, jazz for a decade that seemed to have overlooked it. Tyner is at times so skilled he comes across as mechanical, and the drumming, to put it simply, is out of this world. The Japanese pressing is incredibly quiet, easily placing it among the top tier of sound quality.

  • Tyner's Ensemble Brilliance

    3 out of 5 stars
    lafuPM_March 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

McCoy Tyner's distinctive modal and quartal harmony approach wasn't something he picked up in a day. It was meticulously refined through countless sessions with legends like Coltrane, Henderson, and Shorter, gradually shaping his unique, adventurous sound. However, it's not accurate to assume that his earlier albums lack depth while his later works are automatically infused with 'the magic'; he could seamlessly switch between his different styles to suit the recording session. While this is very much an ensemble album, featuring a rich array of woodwinds (particularly soprano sax), Tyner still manages to stand out at all the right moments. You'll find plenty of his signature modal playing and blazing single-line work to appreciate here. I'd also call this a drummer's album, with some truly impressive drum solos and percussion work. The recording quality is crisp, though the bass could be a bit stronger. Personally, I'd prefer the piano to be louder and the drums a touch softer in the mix, but clearly, Tyner wanted to highlight his band's collective talents. 3.5 stars. Worth a listen.

McCoy Tyner's distinctive modal and quartal harmony style wasn't something that happened instantly. It was carefully crafted over numerous sessions with the likes of Coltrane, Henderson, and Shorter, gradually shaping his unique, adventurous sound. However, it's not accurate to assume that his earlier albums lack depth while the later ones possess 'the magic'; he could seamlessly switch between his different musical personas to suit the recording session. While this is very much an ensemble album, filled with woodwinds (particularly soprano sax), McCoy still manages to stand out at just the right times. You'll find plenty of his modal playing and intense single-line work to appreciate here. I'd also describe this as a drum-centric record, featuring some truly impressive drum solos and percussion work. The recording quality is clean, though the bass could be a bit stronger. Personally, I'd prefer the piano to be louder and the drums a tad softer in the mix, but it's clear he wanted to highlight his band. 3.5 stars. Worth a listen.

  • Tyner's Thrilling 70s Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    Lupat14February 22, 2024United States🇺🇸

Another 70s gem from Tyner that's shockingly underrated (check out Extensions, Atlantis, Song of the New World, and plenty more). McCoy carried on the legacy of the iconic mid-60s Trane quartet, pushing it into the 70s. It's a thrilling, demanding listen. The sound quality here isn't the best, but the brilliance of the compositions and creativity leap out. You can find budget-friendly copies everywhere, so grab one!

About McCoy Tyner

McCoy Tyner, born Alfred McCoy Tyner in Philadelphia in 1938, was a titan of jazz piano, renowned for his powerful, propulsive style and innovative approach to harmony. His journey began with the legendary John Coltrane Quartet in the early 1960s, where his thunderous chords and intricate melodies became a cornerstone of the group's groundbreaking sound. Tyner's influence extended far beyond his time with Coltrane, as he led his own groups for decades, earning him the title of one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time. His modal and avant-garde styles, along with his distinctive chord voicings, have been widely imitated and adopted by generations of pianists. A five-time Grammy Award winner and NEA Jazz Master, Tyner's discography is a treasure trove of jazz classics, with albums like "The Real McCoy" showcasing his virtuosity and creativity. His music continues to inspire and captivate, cementing his legacy as a true jazz legend.
