Product description

"Etudes," released in December 1988 by the legendary Paul Motian, is a captivating journey into the world of jazz, cool jazz, and free jazz. This album, recorded in September 1987 and mixed in October of the same year, features the masterful interplay between Motian on drums, Charlie Haden on bass, and Geri Allen on piano. The nine-track collection, spanning 49 minutes, is a testament to the trio's exceptional musical chemistry and improvisational prowess.

The album opens with a poignant rendition of "Lonely Woman," followed by the energetic "Dolphy's Dance," showcasing the trio's dynamic range. "Sandino" and "Fiasco" offer intricate compositions that highlight the musicians' individual talents and collective harmony. The two etudes, "Etude I" and "Etude II," provide a glimpse into the trio's exploratory and experimental side, while tracks like "Blues in Motion" and "Shuffle Montgomery" bring a sense of groove and rhythm to the forefront.

"Etudes" is a remarkable collaboration that underscores the deep respect and musical understanding between Motian, Haden, and Allen. The album's intricate compositions and spontaneous improvisations make it a standout in the jazz genre, offering both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and newcomers a rich and rewarding listening experience. Recorded and mixed in New York City, with mastering done in Milano, this album is a true gem in the catalog of Paul Motian and his esteemed collaborators.
