This collection of five tracks, spanning a concise 33 minutes, showcases Dolphy's virtuosity as a multi-instrumentalist and his innovative approach to composition and improvisation. The album features a blend of genres, including free jazz, bebop, and avant-garde, demonstrating Dolphy's versatility and boundary-pushing spirit.

The album opens with "Jitterbug Waltz," a lively and intricate piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. • Dolphy's Jazz Mastery Unleashed

    3 out of 5 stars
    gabaJF_May 19, 2024United States🇺🇸

If you're anything like me and have grown to admire Eric Dolphy as a sideman on your go-to Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Mingus, or Oliver Nelson records, and are itching to explore his discography further, this 2-disc compilation might just be your cup of tea. It showcases two full albums: "Outward Bound" from 1964, and "Out There" from 1961. (He's quite fond of including "Out" in his titles, haha) "Outward Bound" (Disc 1) boasts some breathtaking tracks, half of which are penned by Dolphy himself. These two-horn arrangements are ingenious and flawlessly performed. Dolphy's bass clarinet, flute, and alto saxophone work is incredibly technical and inventive. You'll also encounter some impeccably crisp trumpet playing by Freddie Hubbard, who is every bit Dolphy's match on this record. "Out There" (Disc 2) is a congregation of 'jazz oddballs'. I've never before encountered a jazz ensemble led by bass clarinet and cello! Once you get past the initial bewilderment of imagining lost orchestra students roaming the band room, the music within is truly exceptional. Dolphy crafts his lengthy phrases with meticulous care. For the ultimate example of this, I point you to his opening flute phrase on Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". I've transcribed and analyzed it, and it still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. By the way, that's none other than Ron Carter delivering an outstanding performance on the cello. He approaches it either with a bow or with plucked fingers, much like he's playing a high-register double bass. It's also worth noting that Roy Haynes is absolutely phenomenal on the drums throughout. The audio quality of these two reissues is top-notch. The pressing is excellent. Highly recommended.

About Eric Dolphy

Eric Dolphy was a groundbreaking American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader, renowned for his distinctive styles on alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet. Born in Los Angeles in 1928, Dolphy's innovative spirit left an indelible mark on jazz, particularly in the early phases of the free jazz movement. Emerging from the bebop revolution influenced by legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Dolphy's virtuoso improvisations and avant-garde compositions set him apart. His influential albums, such as "The Illinois Concert" and "The Quest," showcase his genre-defying genius. Tragically, Dolphy's life was cut short in 1964, but his legacy endures, inspiring generations of musicians and listeners alike.
