Discovery! - Charles Lloyd

Product description

Charles Lloyd's debut album, "Discovery!", is a groundbreaking exploration into the realms of jazz and free jazz, released in July 1964 under the Columbia label. This captivating collection of eight tracks showcases Lloyd's extraordinary talent as a saxophonist, accompanied by a stellar lineup including Don Friedman and Eddie Khan. Recorded in May 1964, the album features a blend of original compositions and reinterpretations of classic songs, each track offering a unique glimpse into Lloyd's innovative musical vision.

"Discovery!" opens with the enchanting "Forest Flower," a piece that sets the tone for the album's introspective and melodic journey. The album continues with "How Can I Tell You?" and "Little Peace," both of which highlight Lloyd's ability to weave intricate melodies with a sense of calm and reflection. "Bizzare" introduces a more experimental side, showcasing the free jazz influences that would later define Lloyd's career. The album also includes beautiful renditions of standards like "Days Of Wine And Roses" and "Ol' Five Spot," demonstrating Lloyd's versatility and mastery of the genre.

With a total duration of 47 minutes, "Discovery!" is a testament to Charles Lloyd's early genius and his enduring impact on the jazz world. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Lloyd's music, this album is a essential addition to any jazz collection, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Charles Lloyd

Charles Lloyd is a legendary American jazz musician and composer, renowned for his mastery of the tenor saxophone and flute, as well as his occasional forays into piano, tΓ‘rogatΓ³, and percussion. Born in 1938, Lloyd has been a towering figure in the jazz world for over six decades, known for his free-spirited musical vision and his ability to blend jazz with folk, rock, and other genres. He is the last surviving member of an inspired generation of American saxophonists from the 1950s, and his music continues to evolve and inspire, reflecting a lifetime of experience. Lloyd's accolades include the title of NEA Jazz Master, Chevalier des Arts et Lettres, and induction into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. He holds honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music and CalArts, and at 87 years old, he continues to create incredible music from his home in Santa Barbara, California.
