Great work by Mike Vernon (Ten Years After) on production, excellent engineering from Gus Dudgeon, fantastic soundscape, superb stereo. First time seeing Mick Taylor here!

John Mayall masterfully embodies the spirit of Albert King in his guitar playing and echoes the vocal style of Skip James, all while maintaining his unique voice. This album is a solid rendition of blues classics, featuring excellent choices from Chicago blues artists. However, I never get the sense that Mayall takes these songs to new levels or offers unique interpretations. Instead, it's a faithful, straightforward tribute to Chicago blues, showcasing Mayall's skill and the talent of the outstanding musicians he collaborated with during that period. Particularly noteworthy is that this marks the debut recording of a young Mick Taylor on guitar, who would later join The Rolling Stones and contribute to iconic albums like "Let It Bleed" and many of their 70s hits.

Calling this album "Funeral Parade" might've been more fitting. It's not just 'Accidental Suicide' that gives this vibe. The song's opening lyrics touch on Jimi Hendrix's untimely death: "Well, I wanna share a thought or two 'bout Jimmy Hendrix. Appears it was accidental suicide. But amidst all the grief, they paused to heed the caution. He overdosed and never knew how he went...". John Mayall's vocals sound more melancholic than ever, and it's kinda contagious when you're listening. We'd all be better off if Jimi just chilled with some German or Czech beer. 😀
