This album is a bit of a puzzle. It's like it's trying to sing the praises of the laid-back life in Laurel Canyon near LA, with all the images on the cover and the song lyrics, but then you find out all the tracks were actually recorded in 1968 in Hempstead, near London, at the Decca Studios. Big names in blues-rock like Peter Green and Mick Taylor backed John up, so the music is pure British blues-rock. It's a bit confusing, almost like it's not being totally honest, and maybe a bit shortsighted. Writing this review 55 years later, I'd say that with the climate crisis, London's weather is probably more comfortable than LA's.
Absolute worst sounding album in my whole collection. I've got around 5 distinct copies, and every single one of them has surface noise issues.
This album captures Mayall's take on his three-week getaway in Laurel Canyon...the words are childish and foolish. It appears he spent his time there just lounging in bed and hanging out with a shaman. But his band is awesome and the tracks are executed brilliantly. It's a fantastic pressing with tons of clarity.
Based on the images of the labels for the Holland release and the vinyl's weight, I'm pretty sure this isn't a 1968 original, but rather a reissue. Likely from the late 70s to early 80s.
