  • Fusion Strings Shine

    3 out of 5 stars
    XeyWuympujlApril 13, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

Though it doesn't quite match the consistency of Stone Flute, another string-infused Herbie album from the same era, side 1 is incredibly powerful and features slow, heavy passages that verge on Trip-Hop. Over time, I've encountered numerous efforts to merge rock with symphonic strings, and frankly, I find them overly dramatic and not my cup of tea. However, on side 1 of this album, Herbie and his band of fusion elite seamlessly blend a rock-like sound with eerie, cavernous string arrangements, making it my favorite example of an orchestra paired with a Bass, Guitar, and Drums group. Kudos to Conductor/arranger William S Fischer, who opts for a spooky vibe over grandeur. In the liner notes of his album Circle's reissue, he detailed his approach to writing strings for rock. Side 2 of Concerto Grosso, though, is more third stream-oriented, and I wasn't particularly fond of it.

  • Herbie Mann's Best Sound

    5 out of 5 stars

In my opinion, the sound quality of this pressing is fantastic. What a captivating album! It might just be my top pick from Herbie Mann's discography that I've listened to so far.

About Herbie Mann

Herbie Mann, born Herbert Jay Solomon, was a pioneering American jazz flutist and a key figure in the early world music scene. Starting his career as a saxophonist in a military band, Mann soon made a name for himself by specializing in the flute, becoming one of the first jazz musicians to do so. His versatile career spanned a wide range of genres, including Latin jazz, Brazilian jazz, bossa nova, soul jazz, jazz funk, and cool jazz. Mann gained significant popularity in the 1960s and ventured into pop, Latin, reggae, and disco in the 1970s. His most notable hit, "Hi-Jack," topped the Billboard dance charts for three weeks in 1975. Known for his prolific output and beloved in jazz circles, Herbie Mann's music continues to captivate audiences with its innovative blend of styles and infectious rhythms.
