Dude, my past three TTL Institut Audio (006, 005, and 004) copies all got some hiss on 'em. Bummer 'cause these look stunning, but the sound ain't as crisp as they should be.
After much deliberation, I decided to order this from amaz.ca and received this particular pressing. The mastering exceeded my expectations, but unfortunately, there's some unwanted noise present. It's mostly noticeable at the beginning of each side. Side A was the clear winner, with several tracks being completely silent, while Side B had a persistent crackle throughout. My copy is right on the edge of being acceptable or unbearable, LOL. I'm not sure how to proceed, as I've lost the motivation to deal with returns or exchanges. At least it was reasonably priced, all things considered. We'll see how it goes. Tomorrow, I'll give it a good cleaning and give it another spin. GREAT F'ng ALBUM, though. Man, this is something I wish Steve Albini had worked on, capturing it on tape. That being said, the mastering is solid, and it doesn't have any of those digital LP issues I despise. 3 for the pressing, 5 for the music and mastering, so 4 on discogs, lol. I didn't receive a download card.
This album is fantastic! However, the pressing has some irritating issues. It arrived a bit bent, but it still plays perfectly. The warping is noticeable though. There are minor scratches and marks on it, which don't affect the sound, but they're there. It also had a good amount of grime and dust, so I had to clean it as soon as I opened the package.
I must say, the fusion of Thai, Mexican, and funk on this vinyl record is an absolute delight to the ears. I was a huge fan of their previous album, and this one has not disappointed. It's truly a fantastic album! However, my copy is plagued with an excessive amount of surface noise, and that's after I gave it a thorough initial cleaning with my Hannl RCM. I'll revisit this review after attempting a couple more deep cleans to see if the grime in the grooves can be removed, but my initial impression is not promising. I'm planning to reach out to the label to see if they can assist me with this issue. I'll update this review once I have more information. UPDATE 5/22/2018: I got in touch with the label, and they're sending me a new copy. I'll share my thoughts once I receive it. Keeping my fingers crossed. Just so you know, the deep cleaning didn't make a difference with my initial copy. UPDATE 6/15/2018: I received the replacement copy from the label. Unfortunately, side two had significant surface damage across several tracks. There was loud distortion and popping on those tracks. I took photos to show the label. If not for this damage, this pressing might have been acceptable. The label is sending one final replacement, so I'll update you all then. I also ordered an import copy and will share my thoughts on that as well. UPDATE 6/20/2018: I got my numbered off-white vinyl import copy, but I was let down. A comprehensive cleaning—using a stronger than usual detergent concentration (2.5%) with DH2O rinse—improved the playback. Perhaps repeated cleaning and a few plays might reduce the surface noise to an acceptable level. My copy is on the borderline. UPDATE 6/30/2018: I received a second replacement copy from the label today. It's not often you find a record label that stands by their products like this. I'm thrilled to report that this copy was excellent! It didn't have any of the issues I mentioned earlier, and the playback was a revelation compared to all my previous copies. The problems I've encountered were related to the early pressings of this LP. This later pressing looks and sounds vastly superior. So, good copies of this truly remarkable LP are now available!
I waited for this version, thinking it might be an improvement, and I guess I got fortunate because it turned out great - no warps, no seam tears, and the album is super quiet with excellent sound. It's a shame that buying from GZ is always a gamble.
