Product description

Dive into the rich, soulful world of jazz with Johnny Griffin's "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," a captivating collection released in 2016. This album is a testament to Griffin's mastery of the tenor saxophone, showcasing his prowess in the realms of hard bop and bebop. With a running time of nearly two hours, this 24-track opus offers an extensive journey through the genres, featuring both traditional tunes and classic standards.

Johnny Griffin, a seasoned musician with over a decade of recording experience by the mid-1950s, brings his signature style to each track. The album opens with the hauntingly beautiful "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," setting the tone for a series of enchanting performances. Standout tracks like "These Foolish Things," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and "Gloomy Sunday" highlight Griffin's ability to infuse each piece with depth and nuance. Traditional songs such as "The Kerry Dancers" and "Green Grow the Rushes" are reimagined with a modern twist, while timeless classics like "God Bless the Child" and "Good Morning Heartache" are given new life through Griffin's unique interpretation.

"Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" is not just an album; it's a celebration of Johnny Griffin's artistry and his enduring impact on the jazz genre. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Griffin's work, this album is a treasure trove of musical excellence that will captivate and inspire.

About Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin, affectionately known as "the Little Giant," was a powerhouse of jazz, renowned for his formidable technique and fiery performances. Born in Chicago in 1928, Griffin's career spanned over six decades, beginning in the mid-1940s and continuing until his passing in 2008. A pioneer of hard bop, Griffin's music is characterized by its complexity and harmonic richness, showcasing his remarkable ability to navigate intricate melodies with ease. His discography is vast, featuring notable collaborations with legends like Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Griffin's influence extended beyond the United States; after relocating to Europe in the 1960s, he became a beloved figure in the European jazz scene, particularly as a member of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. Griffin's legacy is celebrated not just for his technical prowess but also for the warmth and blues foundation that underpinned his playing, making him one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists.
