I wasn't anticipating much from this one after the slight letdown with Kingdom Come. However, the video for American Gangster left a strong and lasting impression on me, so I decided to revisit this CD with renewed confidence, and it did not let me down at all.... His rap style and delivery are truly unique - you can tell that Jay-Z is in his element, with lyrics flowing directly from his mind to the mic. His voice is perfectly centered in the stereo mix. The production is fantastic, and the mastering is excellent, adding to the overall quality. The featured artists are well-chosen, as usual: Lil' Wayne, Nas, and his longtime friend Beanie Sigel are on the more intense tracks. Kanye West and Pharrell contribute to the more playful songs. Even his wife, Beyoncé, makes a few nice appearances as a background singer. What makes this album so outstanding is the music! I've never heard a rap album with so much depth and variety. The samples sound so familiar that you often think "HIT" even before the song ends. And the producers: Diddy, LV, and Sean C produced most of the tracks, and their work is exceptional. You can hear a lot of real instruments, including drums, guitar, and even a horn section, pianos, and more. To top it off, there are a few hardcore tracks by Just Blaze (on the Beanie Sigel collaboration), DJ Toomp, and others. The Neptunes and even Jermaine Dupri add their unique touch to the album (JD produced the Nas/Jay-Z track). This LP is easily twice as good as the rushed Kingdom Come, close to The Blueprint, and on the same level as The Black Album.
