Product description

Experience the golden age of opera with Régine Crespin's captivating debut album, "Airs d'opéras," recorded in the heart of Paris in February 1958. This exquisite collection showcases the extraordinary vocal prowess of Régine Crespin, one of the most celebrated sopranos of the 20th century, accompanied by the prestigious Orchestre du Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris under the direction of Otto Ackermann.

"Airs d'opéras" is a stunning anthology of operatic arias that span the rich tapestry of French and German opera. From the dramatic intensity of Verdi's "Il trovatore" and the tragic beauty of "Otello" to the lyrical romance of Gounod's "Faust" and the mystical allure of Wagner's "Tannhäuser," each track is a masterclass in vocal artistry. Crespin's powerful yet nuanced performances bring depth and authenticity to these iconic roles, making this album a timeless treasure for opera enthusiasts and classical music lovers alike.

The album opens with a breathtaking rendition of "Guillaume Tell" by Rossini, featuring Crespin's flawless French diction and soaring vocals. It continues with arias from Verdi's "Il trovatore" and "Otello," where Crespin's dramatic flair and technical brilliance shine through. The album also includes a poignant performance of Wagner's "Tannhäuser," showcasing Crespin's ability to convey both vulnerability and strength. The collection culminates with a hauntingly beautiful aria from Berlioz's "La damnation de Faust," a testament to Crespin's versatility and mastery of the operatic repertoire.

Recorded in mono, "Airs d'opéras" captures the essence of live opera performances from the mid-20th century, offering a glimpse into the golden era of operatic recording. The album's historical significance, combined with Crespin's unparalleled talent, makes it a cherished addition to any classical music collection. Whether you're a seasoned opera aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to enchant and inspire.

Régine Crespin, born in Marseilles in 1927, was a French soprano whose illustrious career spanned nearly four decades, from 1950 to 1989. She was the first French prima donna to achieve a truly international reputation following the Second World War, captivating audiences with her powerful and nuanced performances. Crespin's repertoire was vast, encompassing roles from Italian, French, German, and Russian operas across various musical periods. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Wagner and Strauss heroines, earning her the nickname 'the French cannon' from British engineers for her immense vocal power.
