Product description

Dive into the sonic universe of The Orb with their 2021 remix album, "Abolition of the Royal Familia (Guillotine Mixes)." This captivating collection, released on Cooking Vinyl, is a testament to the band's enduring influence in the IDM and ambient genres. Clocking in at a substantial 1 hour and 28 minutes, this album is a journey through twelve meticulously crafted tracks, each a unique interpretation of The Orb's signature sound.

The album kicks off with "Daze (BLM Remix23)" remixed by David Harrow, setting the tone for the eclectic mix that follows. From the hauntingly beautiful "Queen of Hearts (Duck or Drown)" by the Moody Boyz to the atmospheric "Ital Orb (Iron Chair)" by Gaudi, each track offers a distinct flavor while maintaining the cohesive essence of The Orb's musical vision. Notable contributions include remixes by Andy Falconer, Paul Metamono, and Violeta Vicci, each bringing their unique style to the table.

"Abolition of the Royal Familia (Guillotine Mixes)" is not just a remix album; it's a celebration of collaboration and innovation. The Orb has invited a diverse range of artists to reinterpret their music, resulting in a rich tapestry of sounds that span the spectrum of ambient and IDM. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to The Orb's music, this album offers a fresh perspective on their iconic sound.

The album was released on April 9, 2021, and is available in various formats, including a limited edition blue vinyl exclusive to independent record stores. This release follows the band's 17th studio album, "Abolition of the Royal Familia," released in 2020, and continues their tradition of pushing the boundaries of electronic music. For those who enjoy exploring the depths of ambient and IDM, this album is a treasure trove of sonic delights.

This 2LP set was released in 2020.

This remix album is quite enjoyable. I particularly love the Falconer remix. Track 6 has a strong resemblance to System 7, making me wonder if "Panda Steve" and "Panda Miquette" might've teamed up with The Lost Stoned Pandas?

  • 2021 Favorite Album

In 2021, I found myself coming back to this album more than any other. I picked it up around the same time as the first version, but this one really resonated with me, especially during bike rides when my MP3 player shuffled the tracks. It turned out that my two favorite songs ended up being the last ones I heard -- "Slave til You Die" and "Weekend" (which is hands-down my top groove of the year -- pure blissful ORB vibes!).

  • Colorful Vinyl Replacement

I'm really pleased that after they sent me the black vinyl version, they right away sent a replacement with a tracking number. My copy is perfect. The color of these records matches the artwork beautifully. Some remixes are just okay, while others are fantastic.

  • Variety Album Delight

I agree with what Flambient said, but if I was forced to pick just one song, track 8 would be my top choice. The variety in this album is really great; I'm a big fan of variety. I honestly can't think of anything I'd want to change about this album.

  • The Orb's Magic Vinyl

For two whole years, I was on the fence about getting this "just another remix album" to add to my The Orb collection. But boy, am I happy I finally did! The blue see-through vinyl is absolutely stunning, almost like it's got some kind of magic to it. Sure, you might read all sorts of things about the remixes, but I'm telling you, I love them even more than the original album! I really hope they release those dub mixes that came with the deluxe edition on vinyl someday too. I just can't get enough of The Orb. And that's been the case since I was just 16, which, believe it or not, is 29 years ago now!

About The Orb

The Orb, founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty, are pioneers of the ambient house genre, blending electronic, house, dub, and techno into a unique psychedelic sound. The Orb's music is known for its soulful rhythms and intricate soundscapes, often incorporating a diverse array of samples and recordings. With a career spanning over three decades, The Orb has released numerous studio albums, including the critically acclaimed "Abolition of the Royal Familia" and "Prism." Their influential work has earned them a dedicated following and collaborations with notable artists such as David Gilmour and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
