This vinyl record features a single, extended track, often performed live, that doesn't quite fit into any album. The standout piece, "A Change of Seasons", is truly captivating and the main draw of this release. Despite the album's near hour-long duration, it was labeled an EP upon release to steer clear of being considered a conventional studio album. In my view, the band set an incredibly high bar with this track, one that remains unmatched to this day! As usual, Music On Vinyl's "Audiophile" editions are top-notch.
During the 70s, the suite was the go-to song structure for progressive bands. It was a lengthy composition with various sections tied together, allowing musicians to showcase their boundless creativity: an entire LP side dedicated to it, like an ambitious rock symphony that shattered conventional song structures. In the 90s, Dream Theater revitalized this musical concept. "A Change of Seasons" - written at the start of the 90s but recorded and released in 1995 due to label demands - is a grand opus divided into seven parts. One of the peak moments in Dream Theater's career for its emotional depth and melodic ingenuity, a masterpiece that blends metal's heaviness with progressive sophistication. Intriguing (though not unforgettable) renditions of classic tracks round out the album, but the most unforgettable classic remains the suite itself.
Currently, this is the top-notch pressing you can get. MOV really outdid themselves with this EP, which absolutely warranted a vinyl release back in '95.
Just one track. A single track. A single, bloody, amazing track. But what a track! Over 23 minutes of stunning musical exploration, capturing the spirit of progressive rock and shaping progressive metal. Sandwiched between two albums where the label pressured the band to chase commercial hits, this is a middle finger to commercialism and a full-on celebration of artistic freedom. It marked the second pinnacle for Dream Theater in just six years since their debut, already proving their distinctiveness and promise. From its most serene and tranquil passages to its most intense and shadowy, melody and unity always shine through, hinting at the band's future greatness and widespread acclaim. Prioritizing the song above all else, it's accompanied by four cover tunes of rock legends (Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc.), rounding out the package with a nod to their influences. When folks today wonder what prog is, some point to djent. I point to "A Change Of Seasons.
Just one track. A solitary song. A lone, bloody song. But what a masterpiece! Over 23 minutes of stunning musical exploration, capturing the spirit of progressive rock and paving the way for progressive metal. Released, quite ironically, between two albums where the label pressured the band to create more commercial material, this is a defiant middle finger to commercialism and a full-hearted celebration of boundless creativity. The second pinnacle of Dream Theater's career in just six years since their debut, it spoke volumes about the band's originality and potential. From its most serene and tranquil moments to its most intense and shadowy, there's always room for melody and unity, already hinting at why the band would grow to be as massive and renowned as it became, prioritizing the song above all else. Alongside it, four cover versions of classic rock hits (Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc.) that round out the package as a great display of the band's influences. When folks today ask what prog is, some say djent. I say "A Change Of Seasons.
