Product description

"1975: The Duets" is a captivating studio album that showcases the extraordinary musical chemistry between jazz legends Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Released in 1975 under the Verve label, this album is a unique collection of duets, marking the only time the pair recorded together as a duo. The eight-track album spans a diverse range of genres, including cool jazz, bossa nova, and Brazilian jazz, offering a rich and varied listening experience.

Recorded and mixed at CI Recording Studios in New York, with one track laid down aboard the SS ..., the album captures the spontaneity and intimacy of the duo's performances. Paul Desmond's smooth alto saxophone weaves seamlessly with Dave Brubeck's innovative piano playing, creating a sound that is both sophisticated and accessible. Tracks like "Alice In Wonderland," "These Foolish Things," and "Summer Song" highlight the duo's ability to blend melody and improvisation, resulting in a timeless jazz experience.

With a runtime of just over 37 minutes, "1975: The Duets" is a concise yet profound exploration of jazz duets. The album's enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport listeners to a place where the interplay between two master musicians takes center stage. Whether you're a longtime fan of jazz or a newcomer to the genre, this album is a testament to the enduring legacy of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.

About Paul Desmond

Paul Desmond, born Paul Emil Breitenfeld in San Francisco, was a pioneering American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, renowned for his distinctive, cool jazz sound. As a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1951 to 1967, Desmond's elegant and airy playing style captivated audiences worldwide. His most famous composition, "Take Five," remains the best-selling jazz single of all time, showcasing his genius for melodic improvisation. Desmond's ambition was to create a sound as refined as a dry martini, and his shimmering, recognizable tone on the alto saxophone continues to influence jazz musicians today. With a career spanning the 1950s and 1960s, Desmond's work in cool jazz, bossa nova, and Brazilian jazz has left an indelible mark on the music world.
