Gather Pete Jolly, Mel Lewis, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, and a bunch of other top-notch studio musicians, and you've got this album right here. Back in 1960, this renowned arranger and musician recorded this jazz concept album for RCA. What makes it so special to me? Well, my Dad visited a stereo shop in North Hollywood and bought a Scott amplifier and a massive speaker covered in rattan. Along with a classic Garrard turntable (that I still own), we were part of the Hi-Fi scene in LA. I was in third grade, all set for my new audio adventure that lay ahead. Little did I know I would end up working in pro radio, TV, cable TV, and other media in a 52-year career that lasted until I retired over nine years ago. One of the first records we got was this Shorty Rogers vinyl. Why? No clue what made my Dad pick this one. He usually bought our records over the hill in Beverly Hills, near his office on Wilshire Blvd. I played this album over and over and over. The harmonics of the brass and woodwinds gave me such great feelings in my eardrums. Yeah, I lost it at some point and thought, "So be it," but thanks to the internet, I found a near-perfect copy for just twelve bucks. Oh, joy! Shorty Rogers and the gang are now back on my turntable, swinging this one again. Sometimes life can come full circle, at least in the world of turntables.
