"On American Shores" is een prachtig album van de Portland State University Chamber Choir, onder leiding van Bruce Browne, met werken van de Estse componist Veljo Tormis. Het album, uitgebracht in 2010 op het label Clarion, bevat 25 nummers die een breed scala aan emoties en thema's belichten.
Het album opent met de "Eesti kalendrilaulud" (Estse kalenderliederen), een reeks van zeven liederen die de Estse folklore en mythologie weerspiegelen. Deze liederen worden gevolgd door een serie van drie Estse spel-liederen, evenals twee liederen gebaseerd op de sonnetten van Ernst Enno.
Een van de meest opvallende aspecten van het album is de manier waarop Tormis' composities de natuur en het landschap van Estland weerspiegelen. De "Looduspildid" (Natuurbeelden) zijn een reeks van zeven liederen die de schoonheid van de Estse natuur vastleggen, van de late zomer tot de koude herfstnachten.
Het album wordt afgesloten met "Lauliku lapsepoli" (De zangeres' kindertijd) en "Lauliku lopusonad" (De zangeres' slotwoorden), twee liederen die een gevoelige en intieme kant van de componist laten zien.
Met zijn unieke combinatie van Estse folklore, natuurlijke schoonheid en emotionele diepte is "On American Shores" een must voor iedereen die van klassieke vocale muziek houdt.
