Nicolai Ghiaurov

Nicolai Ghiaurov, the towering Bulgarian bass (literally, at 6ft 2in and 200 lbs), was a colossus of the operatic stage for three decades. Born in 1929 in Velingrad, his rich, resonant voice and commanding presence made him one of the most celebrated basses of the postwar era. Ghiaurov's performances were not just technically brilliant but also deeply emotional, as he often spoke of the "suffering underneath" the joy of singing. His repertoire spanned opera, classical, and requiem, with a particular affinity for Russian works. He shared the stage and his life with the renowned soprano Mirella Freni, adding a romantic chapter to his illustrious career. Ghiaurov's recordings, such as his stunning 1962 and 1964 Russian recitals, continue to captivate audiences worldwide. His portrayal of Mephistopheles in Gounod's "Faust" remains legendary. Nicolai Ghiaurov passed away in 2004, but his legacy as a titan of opera endures.
