This vinyl cover by Willow is absolutely stunning, it's a real gem to find! I've got the US and Japanese editions too. That said, it's fair to admit that this French version isn't quite up there with the Japanese and US ones. Even brand new, the record has some crackles and surface noise, probably 'cause the sound's a bit low what with the soundtrack being 1h15 spread over two sides. (I've tested a few LPs) If you spot this one on sale, snap it up! It's gorgeous and super rare.
This album is filled with lovely orchestral atmospheric tracks, and the "Willow" theme is certainly one of James Horner's standout compositions. I'm not particularly attached to the movie itself, except for a strong sense of nostalgia. Sadly, Willow hasn't aged as gracefully as some other '80s classics. Yet, the soundtrack is fantastic on its own. I've only glanced at the comments about the French pressing, and regrettably, the quality issues here are quite similar (and I'd guess the US versions are the same, since the Canadian one uses their master). They've used a DMM cut to fit as much music as possible onto the record without making it sound terrible. But by cramming 60 minutes onto a 40-minute format, the grooves are super narrow, so even tiny dust particles and imperfections really mess with the sound quality. For a soundtrack this soft, scratches and pops are all over the place. It's such a bummer they didn't opt for a double album. Records just aren't meant to hold 60 minutes of music. Alright, rant over, but still, this is an amazing soundtrack!
