Product Description

Sumac's "What One Becomes" is a relentless journey through the heavier realms of experimental metal, released on June 10, 2016, under Thrill Jockey. Clocking in at 58 minutes, this album is a masterclass in blending sludge, drone, stoner, noise rock, and doom metal into a cohesive and crushing whole. Sumac, known for their intense and immersive soundscapes, deliver a powerful and uncompromising experience with this release.

The album is divided into two distinct parts for each of its central themes, explored through tracks like "Image of Control," "Rigid Man," and "Clutch of Oblivion." These pieces showcase Sumac's ability to build immense tension and release it in waves of crushing riffs and dissonant harmonies. "Blackout" is particularly noteworthy, spanning three parts that delve into the darker, more chaotic aspects of their sound. The album concludes with "Will to Reach," a track that encapsulates the band's dynamic range and technical prowess.

Sumac's "What One Becomes" is not just an album; it's an exploration of the outer limits of heavy music. Fans of bands like Neurosis, Boris, and Sunn O))) will find much to appreciate here. The band's ability to balance raw power with intricate composition makes this a standout release in their discography. Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the underground metal scene or a curious newcomer, Sumac's "What One Becomes" offers a challenging and rewarding listen.

This 2017 Limited Edition Repress 2LP set is pressed on White vinyl.

  • Sumac Vinyl Brilliance

    4 out of 5 stars
    puotyubppied24 July 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is amazing! The vinyl quality is fantastic, and I haven't noticed any problems with it. I'm a big fan of Sumac, which is surprising since I usually don't go for sludge music, like 97 percent of the time. But this record is absolutely brilliant!

  • Turner's Heavy Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    kodjnleudlu12 April 2025United States🇺🇸

Aaron Turner wasn't always my favorite, but this new album is a game-changer. He's gotten insanely heavy, backed by a band that's locked in tighter than ever. Three guys at the top of their game. Brian Cook's skills are no secret, and drummer Nick Yacyshyn is a name you'll want to remember (that drumming is out of this world!!!). This band is something special, with a massive range of sound. Absolutely fantastic album.

  • Red Vinyl Scratch Issue

... but that red vinyl seems to have a bit of an issue, like a tiny scratchy sound. Has anyone else noticed this?
