• A Tribe Called Quest's Final Triumph

  In these gloomy and confusing times, we've been blessed with the sixth and final ATCQ album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service (apparently, the title's a nod to Veterans Day). It's a welcome distraction from the madness of the world, and I must say, it's better than I anticipated. It's a fitting tribute to the late, great Phife, though a few missteps keep it from being perfect. The album's packed with an incredible lineup of musicians and artists like Andre 3000, Jack White, Elton John, Anderson Paak, and Busta Rhymes, among others. It kicks off with a classic Tribe sound on "The Space Program," with Tip and Phife trading verses and Jarobi going all out—it's pure joy. That track, along with "The Donald" (featuring a gruff Busta Rhymes), "Solid Wall of Sound" (with Elton John, which is hard to describe but I think it works), and "We The People" (with its heavy Black Sabbath drums, Q-Tip's conscious lyrics, and powerful vocals) are definite highlights. "Whateva Will Be" has that 90's Tribe feel but with a modern twist, and "Dis Generation" (with an aggressive Busta Rhymes) could easily be a radio hit, though radio seems more interested in playing cookie-cutter trash made by clueless idiots. I'm not a huge fan of the Andre 3000 feature on "Kids," but it's not the worst track—that title goes to "The Killing Season." Kanye's hook was just terrible, and I wasn't feeling Talib on this one either; it just didn't move me. The heartfelt and honest tribute to their fallen comrade Phife is on "Lost Somebody," but I'm confused about the abrupt silence at 4:19. I get that it was to showcase Jack White, but the chorus cuts off abruptly and it just seems odd. The poppy "Enough" is a delicious slice of soulful Tip and is a complete earworm with lush production, and "Ego" is another dope sure-shot, as is "Moving Backwards" (with Anderson Paak). However, "Conrad Tokyo" (featuring Kendrick Lamar) and "Mobius" are fairly average. Overall, I'd say this is a better album than The Love Movement, and as a long-time fan, I'm still quite impressed with it, despite the missteps. 7/10 J.M.S.

  I purchased the Digital DL / Hardcopy CD bundle straight from ATCQ's site. The Digital version I got is at 320 kbps. Does the iTunes version only come in 256?

  Absolutely fantastic pressing! It's easily one of the top hip hop albums released in the past decade. There were a couple of tiny scratches on some sides, but it didn't seem to affect the playback at all.

  Amazing album! I'm a fan of how ATCQ changed up their musical style yet kept their rap essence and lyrical genius intact. The featured artists on this album are a huge plus. It gives it that 2016 vibe and lets you reminisce about the hip-hop artists that were big and relevant during that era (once again, 2016). Rest in peace Phife Dawg! You're the legend that showed the world your incredible talent!
