Product Description

Immerse yourself in the profound and resonant world of Veljo Tormis with "Works for Men's Voice," a captivating collection of choral compositions that blend minimalism with traditional Estonian folk influences. Released on January 1, 2000, under the Toccata Classics label, this album spans a rich hour and seven minutes of powerful vocal performances that showcase Tormis' unique musical language.

The album opens with "An Aboriginal Song," setting the stage for a journey through a variety of themes and moods. Tormis' mastery of choral writing is evident in pieces like "Kaksikpuhendus: I. I'd like to Sing a Song (Double Dedication)" and "Kaksikpuhendus: II. Stars (Double Dedication)," where intricate harmonies and rhythmic precision create a mesmerizing soundscape. The live recording of "Tombtuul (Crosswind)" adds a dynamic energy, while "Kord me tuleme tagasi (Once We Will Reappear): Our Shadows [Once We Will Reappear]" offers a hauntingly beautiful reflection.

A highlight of the album is the section dedicated to "Men's Songs, Vol. 1," featuring a series of traditional songs that Tormis has masterfully arranged. From the stirring "Song of the Turkish War" to the poignant "Serf's Song," these pieces offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage that inspires Tormis' work. The album concludes with "Raua needmine (Curse Upon Iron): Curse Upon Iron," a powerful and dramatic piece that leaves a lasting impression.

Veljo Tormis, a renowned figure in contemporary choral music, brings his deep understanding of Estonian folk traditions and modern compositional techniques to this album. "Works for Men's Voice" is a testament to his ability to create music that is both deeply rooted in tradition and innovatively contemporary. Whether you are a fan of choral music, minimalism, or simply appreciate the beauty of the human voice, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Veljo Tormis

Veljo Tormis (1930-2017) was an Estonian composer celebrated as one of the greatest choral music writers of the 20th century. Born in Kuusalu, Estonia, Tormis was deeply connected to his country's rich choral singing tradition and ancient folk culture. He dedicated his life to preserving and revitalizing traditional Estonian folksongs, or regilaul, creating a unique and powerful musical language. Tormis composed almost exclusively for the voice, leaving behind a vast catalog of songs, song cycles, and large-scale choral works. His compositions often drew from disappearing or extinct languages, giving voice to forgotten cultures. With his innovative approach to choral music and his commitment to preserving Estonia's musical heritage, Veljo Tormis remains an influential figure in the world of contemporary classical music.
