  • Gene Harris' Smooth Jazz-Funk Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    bedawul23 October 2024United States🇺🇸

In my opinion, this album by Gene Harris is his take on what Donald Byrd achieved with Places and Spaces. Don't go in expecting the kind of music he created with the 3 Sounds, or even the fusion vibes of Astral Signal, no - this is a super smooth, dance-floor-ready jazz-funk record. All in all, it's a stunningly produced album, packed with orchestral strings, rich melodies, and heavenly backing vocals. While it's fantastic all the way through, there are a couple of tracks that truly shine: the deeply soulful "If You Can't Find Love Let Love Find You," featuring an incredible vocal performance by Jerry Peters, and a super chill reimagining of "Christo Redentor" that, while not quite as breathtaking as the version from A New Perspective, is still a brilliantly creative take. The nod to Places & Spaces makes more sense when you notice the album's secret ingredient: Donald Byrd's presence on some tracks. With Gene Harris' silky smooth keys and Donald Byrd's polished horn playing, you've got yourself one heck of a rare-groove gem.
