Ellen Allien absolutely nails it with her newest release, "Thrills." The opening track, 'come,' is a heavy, guitar-driven techno smash that sets the tone for this incredible album. This music is probably best enjoyed in the future, once our brains have developed enough to grasp the intricate subtleties and dynamic depth of Ellen Allien's work. But, in certain circles, these finer qualities are definitely valued right now.
Ellen Allien's THRILLS kicks off with a bang: the electrifying blend of guitar and electronics in "Come" sets the tone for this album's fresh direction. While BERLINETTE was more club-oriented, THRILLS leans into industrial music, distancing itself from its predecessor. The result is a heavier, grittier sound, even on "Your Body Is My Body," where the tune gets buried under a blanket of noise. Even when the melody takes center stage, like in "Naked Rain," it's deliberately murky, giving the track a dreamy, hazy vibe. That said, industrial isn't the only flavor here: "Down" throws in some funky breaks, and "Ghost Train" has a sleek, smooth groove that makes it stand out. A bit of brightness peeks through in "She Is With Me," and the album wraps up with the pure techno pulse of "Magma." It's an exhilarating journey from start to finish.
