Product Description

Theatre of Tragedy, the Norwegian gothic metal pioneers, made a striking debut with their self-titled album, released on January 1, 1995, under Massacre Records. This 44-minute journey into the depths of dark, atmospheric metal is a seminal work that blends gothic metal, symphonic metal, doom metal, and gothic rock into a hauntingly beautiful tapestry of sound.

The album opens with "A Hamlet for a Slothful Vassal," setting the stage for a collection of tracks that are as poetic as they are powerful. The haunting vocals of Liv Kristine and the deep, resonant growls of Raymond Istvan Rohonyi create a striking contrast that defines the Theatre of Tragedy sound. The symphonic elements, provided by keyboards and strings, add a layer of elegance and drama to the heavy, doom-laden riffs and rhythms.

Tracks like "Cheerful Dirge" and "Hollow-Hearted, Heart-Departed" showcase the band's ability to weave melancholy and beauty into their music, while "Sweet Art Thou" offers a moment of ethereal grace amidst the darker themes. The album's title track, "...A Distance There Is...," is a standout, blending haunting melodies with crushing heaviness.

Theatre of Tragedy's debut album is a landmark in the gothic metal genre, offering a rich, atmospheric experience that has influenced countless bands in the years since its release. Whether you're a fan of the genre or simply appreciate powerful, evocative music, this album is a must-listen.

This 2022 Limited Edition Reissue Remastered 2LP set is pressed on Red vinyl.

  • Doom Metal Vocal Brilliance

    5 out of 5 stars
    kuludadt14 November 2025United States🇺🇸

This review is quite a bit delayed, but the sound quality isn't too shabby. It's not the quietest I've come across, but it's pretty decent. There's just a slight hum in the background. As for the music, this album is absolutely brilliant. It's tough to find anything quite like it, save for their subsequent release. Naturally, they pioneered that 'beauty and the beast' vocal approach that so many others would emulate. But what truly stands out is the Olde Englisch lyrics and their delivery, juxtaposed with the doom metal soundtrack. So, there's a real beauty and the beast dynamic between the vocals and the music.

  • Doom Metal Beauty Contrast

    5 out of 5 stars
    jifuyonm14 November 2025United States🇺🇸

Well, this is coming quite a while after I got it, but the pressing isn't bad at all. It's not the quietest record I've ever played, but it's pretty decent. There's just a slight hum in the background. As for the music, this album is absolutely fantastic. It's quite unique, with only their next album coming close. They really started the 'beauty and the beast' vocal thing, which lots of other bands copied. But what really stands out is the Old English lyrics and how they're sung, contrasting with the doom metal. So, there's this beauty and the beast thing going on between the vocals and the music.

The sound quality is incredible! The bass hits hard too. And the gatefold is just as stunning as everyone else has said.

  • Gothic Band's Stunning Debut
