Claire Martin's "The Waiting Game" is a superb release from Linn Records, pressed in '92, with the recording done in '91 at the iconic EMI, Abbey Road Studios in London. The mastering was handled by Ray Staff at The Exchange, London. While it's not explicitly stated, this seems to be an AAA recording/mastering to my ears, as it boasts an analog sound quality with no noticeable digital artifacts. The mids, highs, and lows are all balanced beautifully, with the highs offering a lovely shimmer throughout each track. Claire's vocals are velvety, crisp, and smooth, with a breathy quality that adds to the overall allure. Arnie Somogyi's stand-up bass is presented as a grand, wooden instrument, plucked with human touch – his bass playing carries several tracks, as do other musicians. Jim Mullen's acoustic guitar also stands out, clear and precise when it's featured. Jonathan Gee's piano work is exceptional, particularly on "It's Always Four A.M.," complementing Claire's vocals perfectly to make the track truly special. This review is based on listening to this LP on a: Modified Rega P3 with RB880 tonearm and 144g counterweight, 11g Denon DL103r in a metal cap/housing, Delrin platter, Rega Neo Swagman psu, Isoacoustic Orea bronze feet (3), and a pro-ject turntable platform. The phono stage is a Whest Audio TWO.2 class A dual mono fully balanced phono stage, 65db/220ohms. The vinyl is 120g, flat, and well-centered with no warps, though it has some surface noise typical for its age and an unfortunate light scratch from my past handling that is audible. In conclusion: If you enjoy dinner jazz with a distinct UK flavor, well-recorded and mastered with a clear analog signature, grab a copy of Claire Martin's "The Waiting Game," pour your favorite drink, place it on your turntable, drop the needle, and indulge in the smooth, sweet British dinner jazz – though, of course, this LP sounds fantastic anytime! Highly recommended, five stars. Thank you for reading. *Note* All my vinyl records are cleaned on a "Project VC-S MK II Record Cleaner" vacuum record cleaning machine. Music: 5.0 – not a single filler track in my opinion. Mastering/pressing: 5.0 – Linn has done an excellent job here. Inner sleeve: 3.0 – mine has an anti-static one now, but it may have come with a white paper sleeve. Cover: 3.5 – a single cover with a photo of Claire on the front, her name and the title, a small red Linn Records emblem in the top left, and a smaller photo with all the relevant artist and LP info on the back.
