I've got #3905 and honestly, there's no surface noise to speak of. Actually, it's the complete opposite – the re-mastering quality blew me away so much that I immediately went ahead and bought her other vinyl re-releases. Might be some inconsistencies in production, though.
Good to see it's 180g, but I'm not convinced the vinyl is brand new. There's some odd surface noise. Mine is number 5136 out of 10,000.
Hi everyone! I just got my "The Visit" vinyl, and after giving it a spin, I noticed that "The Old Ways" sounds a bit off compared to the CD version. Has anyone else noticed this or found any info about it? Thanks a bunch! Jose
I'm checking out the CD4 Binaural Headphone Mixes, and I was pretty pumped for it. But let me tell you, don't go in expecting some high-end, studio-quality crossfeed remix. It's more like those 8D audio tracks you find on YouTube. It seems like they took the original recording, threw it into some DSP software, cranked up the reverb on the instruments, and tossed in a few new ones that kinda swirl around your head. The bass is amped up too, but it's not exactly crisp. Loreena's vocals sound even more breathy with that boosted lower treble, like she wasn't breathy enough already. I'm giving it 2 stars for the effort, though.
I'm only about three-fifths through this album, and I'd strongly recommend it to any Loreena McKennitt enthusiast. The packaging is outstanding, and the booklet, filled with Loreena's beautifully written thoughts on the era, is a delightful read. She's an amazing storyteller, even in writing. Now, let's talk about the music. I own a DVD-A / SACD player, so I was eagerly anticipating the high-resolution stereo version on disc 5. Unfortunately, I don't have a 5.1 home theater system, so I can't comment on the Surround Sound mixes. The high-res stereo version sounds absolutely flawless, with a seemingly boundless and airy high end. It's smooth and rich like the vinyl (which I also own), but the highest frequencies really shine. On to the binaural headphone mix on disc 4. If you can't play the high-res stereo or surround mixes on the Blu-ray, this headphone mix alone is worth buying this release. I'm listening to it right now, and it's designed to mimic the surround sound experience through headphones. It genuinely feels like a completely new way to experience the album I've been listening to for the past twenty years. It sounds like it was recorded just yesterday, open and airy, with a vast soundscape that seems to extend beyond your headphones. It's a bit gimmicky with some instruments and sounds moving around your head, which makes it quite different from a live performance, but it's still utterly immersive, with Loreena at the heart of it. It's incredible to hear a beloved album in a fresh way. The second and third discs feature rare interviews and live radio performances, and I haven't even gotten to them yet. But having seen Loreena McKennitt live four times, I'm confident they will be excellent as well. This release would be a perfect companion to the vinyl, and so much more than just a worthy replacement for your old CD, even if you have the 2004 remaster. Just go ahead and buy it.
