Product Description

Immerse yourself in the timeless brilliance of Kurt Weill's "The Threepenny Opera," a seminal work in the realm of opera that continues to captivate audiences over a century after its inception. Released on January 1, 2007, under JAY Records, this iconic album spans a concise yet impactful 53 minutes, offering a rich tapestry of musical storytelling that is as relevant today as it was upon its original debut.

"The Threepenny Opera" is a masterful blend of satire, social commentary, and unforgettable melodies, showcasing Weill's unique ability to fuse high art with popular culture. The album's tracklist is a journey through the gritty underworld of Mack the Knife and his associates, with standout tracks like "The Ballad of Mack the Knife," "Pirate Jenny," and "Barbara Song" highlighting Weill's knack for creating memorable, character-driven pieces.

Weill's collaboration with playwright Bertolt Brecht resulted in a work that is both deeply humorous and profoundly critical of societal norms. The album's themes of corruption, love, and survival are as poignant now as they were in the 1920s, making "The Threepenny Opera" a timeless exploration of the human condition.

Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Kurt Weill's "The Threepenny Opera" is an essential addition to your music collection. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to entertain, provoke thought, and leave a lasting impression.

This LP was released in 1985.

  • Brecht's Bitter, Brilliant Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    taronxek21 February 2024United States🇺🇸

The Threepenny Opera" is down-to-earth, sarcastic, and rather unpleasant in its own way. Only Brecht and Weill could make it so amusing and rather alarming. The tunes and words are all first-rate. I particularly enjoy the "Happy Ending" part at the end, which pokes fun at the human experience of slogging through life. Bea Arthur is particularly funny in "Barbara Song" and Scott Merrill's performance of "How to Survive" is spine-tingling; Charlotte Rae as 'Mrs. Peachum' joining in his sentiment is even more unsettling. And no one could possibly deliver such a bitter interpretation of 'Pirate Jenny' than the one and only Lotte Lenya.
