The Space Book is an intriguing album, with a musical focus on balance rather than void. I genuinely appreciate the mix, percussion, bass, and piano; they come across as very prominent and not overpowered by the brass. The soundstage is impressive, and during the sparse exchanges, RVG doesn't overuse the reverb. I'm not using a mono stylus but I imagine this pressing would sound fantastic with one. Even so, what I'm hearing is excellent. I suspect there's a wealth of detail I might be missing, and I'd love to see a future remaster that could uncover even more of this album's sonic landscape. In the meantime, I'll happily keep spinning this version.
If sound's what you're after, don't bother searching for the blue label edition. Excellent channel split, strong bass, and a fantastic overall vibe. An incredible band: Byard, Davis, and Dawson make the ideal rhythm section for Booker. Snag it!
