  • Ramsey Lewis' Rare Gem

    5 out of 5 stars

This is certainly a Ramsey Lewis on Cadet that's not easy to find. I stumbled upon Mother's Nature more frequently. I recall this was a purchase from way back when I was just starting out, and I knew Maurice White was linked to Earth, Wind, and Fire, similarly I knew Richard Evans produced Dorothy Ashby's 3 on Cadet (and back then, for a crate digger, David Axelrod, and Dorothy Ashby seemed to be the first "deep" artists you discover, for me it was Dusty Fingers comp as a gateway). I remember, playing this at the listening station, I was a young high schooler in the late 2000's, and was absolutely amazed. I've given it a revisit a few times in the last year, and the A-Side is just incredible, the B-Side takes some time to grow on you. I realized, this is one Ramsey Lewis record I've only spotted maybe twice, always under $5, but it certainly seems rare in the field (I can't speak to Chicago). It is outstanding, and my favorite work on the Cadet label for him, tied with Funky Serenity on Columbia as my two favorite Ramsey Lewis records. Minnie Riperton definitely sounds like she is on this. If you come across it, grab it! This is some incredible heat.

Side A of this album is pure enchantment. If anyone's familiar with anything akin to Side A, kindly let me know.
