If you're after top-notch recording quality, this is the Firebird recording you want. The level of detail and dynamics is truly impressive, especially for a 1962 recording! And since it's "Stravinsky by Stravinsky," it's got to be the definitive version to have.
This record is an essential addition for anyone passionate about classical music, especially Russian classical music...It's an astonishing rendition of this widely recognized piece, made even more extraordinary as it's Igor Stravinsky himself conducting his own work. I just got a copy in NM condition, and it's genuinely one of my top vinyl records in my collection. The music is breathtaking, but the audio dynamics that come through the vinyl and into your stereo, guided by Maestro Stravinsky's baton, are absolutely mind-blowing! Many of the unique scoring and playing techniques, which are classic Stravinsky (like those for the strings, for instance), produce an eerie and phenomenal sound overall—somewhat reminiscent of a Theremin. The piece holds historical importance as it was directly commissioned by Sergei Diaghelev for the Ballets Russes, one of two very famous ex-pat ballet companies made up of Russian-born and trained dancers living and performing in exile after the Russian Revolution. The story of the Ballets Russes is fascinating in its own right. The Ballets Russes is notable for (at the time), very modern and avant-garde performances—quite different from the classic repertoire in the canon of Russian ballet like Paquita, Sylphides, Swan Lake. Stravinsky's works for the Ballets Russes, particularly The Firebird, are now considered part of the canon and are very frequently performed. The unparalleled choreography of Mikhel Fokine and Vaslav Najinsky are often preserved in present-day performances.
