Navigating a Gloomy Vessel“A tempest is approaching. Dust and papers swirl around the room, signaling a storm, the sky is a painted thick whirl of troubled colors. There’s a storm brewing, the branches sway and creak and wave. We’re in for rough weather, I’ve got this headache that’s been lingering for days.” The title track is the essence of melancholy – fourteen minutes of sheer despondency. The Calm Before is a darkly minimal and gloomily acoustic album. “You’ll find yourself isolated when you’ve tumbled from your throne. I only hope there’s mercy shown when you’ve descended from your throne. It can be tough when you fall from such a height, whether you fall or are cast down, the descent is the same. It’s a tremendous long way down when you’ve lost your wings and your crown.” “Wings & Crown” is a real tempestuous piece and it stands as the finest track on the album.
