In my opinion, this could very well be Diana Ross' finest solo album. The production work done by Ashford & Simpson is absolutely outstanding. 'The Boss,' pressed on 180 gram red vinyl, looks and sounds fantastic. I didn't own this vinyl before, and the price was just right. The packaging was quite nice, save for the paper inner sleeve. Not using a polyethylene lined sleeve led to some static when I first played it. All in all, this version of 'The Boss' doesn't seem to have been remastered. The sound quality improved after I cleaned the vinyl with anti static spray and switched to a proper inner sleeve for keeping it safe.
For this album, Diana teamed up again with Ashford & Simpson, who had worked on her initial solo records from the start of the decade. The Boss turned out to be a huge success in the Disco world. Diana, of course, was a massive Gay Icon and one of the top 3 female artists globally during this era. The disco fans went crazy, and the whole album dominated the Billboard disco chart for over a month in late summer. Even today, the album sounds fantastic and has a consistency that's missing from most of her other work, all thanks to A&S's tight control.
this is some realy good disco/ soul tunes from 1979, though it's kinda odd that there's some slow tracks mixed in with the disco ones, which kinda messes it up a bit but overall it's still a solid album to get you grooving 9/10
This remastered disc, boasting 24 Bit (or 20 Bit, as my copy's sticker claims) audio quality, delivers an incredible sound. Diana's disco masterpiece, released at the peak of the disco craze in the summer of '79, dominated the Billboard Disco Action charts with every track topping the list for four consecutive weeks. Crafted by the legendary Ashford and Simpson, this album is a unified gem, often hailed as one of Diana's finest works from the '70s. It's a genuine classic of the era, bringing to mind the vibrant nights at Studio 54. The title track, along with I Ain't Been Licked and No One Gets The Prize, are the ultimate dance-floor anthems. Interestingly, a remix of The Boss catapulted Diana back to the top of the Billboard Dance Chart in 2019, an impressive four decades after its initial release!
