  • Timeless Electronic Jazz Gem

Back in 2001, when I purchased this album, I absolutely adored it. It's a unique blend of electronic, jazzy, and ambient sounds. I still find myself enjoying it to this day. The only downside is that the volume is recorded quite low, but apart from that, it's flawless.

  • Canadian Electronic Fusion Delight

    5 out of 5 stars
    gceoyhcak4 April 2025United States🇺🇸

Manitoba makes their US debut with "START BREAKING MY HEART," blending Four Tet's signature cut-paste-distort electronic style with the atmospheric sounds and melodies that Boards of Canada are known for. What's the deal with Canadians, huh? "Dundas, Ontario" is a groovy little track that keeps its IDM authenticity, while "People Eating Fruit" starts off soft and emotional -- until the beat drops. There's a strong sense of rhythm throughout these tracks, often complementing the melodies beautifully, like in the echoey "Brandon," the dynamic flow of "Schedules & Fares," or the almost-jazz feel of "Paul's Birthday." Some tracks have rhythms that could overpower the melody, like the offbeat breaks and horn chaos of "Mammals vs Reptiles" or the relentless drumming in "Lemon Yoghourt." The remix of "Dundas, Ontario," with its R&B vocal sample and more intense beat, feels worlds apart from the original, with just a hint of the initial melody. "Webers" has a minimalistic quality, with two simple lines (a xylophone and a drum beat) that weave in and out. It's a weird and captivating album.
