Towner's Melancholic Masterpiece

Back in the mid-'80s, my appreciation for Burton, Metheny, and Abercrombie guided me towards Ralph Towner's work on ECM. He's an incredibly inventive musician and composer with a vast collection of captivating albums. On this record, he collaborates with Jan Garbarek on saxophones and Eberhard Weber on bass. Weber's distinctive tone and approach are truly satisfying, while Garbarek's bold, brassy sound offers a striking contrast to the other instruments. The tracks are largely introspective, dissonant, and occasionally melancholic. Towner's technical prowess on the guitar is astonishing. The recording is pristine, with gorgeous guitar tones. However, the sax is a bit too prominent in the mix. A typical ECM pressing, presented with great clarity. 3.5 stars, worth a listen.
