Ellen Allien appears to have picked up some new techniques from her work with Apparat; her latest album _Sool_ shifts away from the club scene, opting for a gentler, more IDM-inspired vibe. Don't get me wrong, the beats are still present, but on tracks like "Caress," they're more subdued, hidden beneath a quasi-industrial surface. "Sprung" is similarly hushed, though it packs more punch; the synth battles of "Its" even more so. She's also adopted a less-is-more approach: "Bim" is quite sparse, while "Zauber" has a near-classical touch with its single clarinet. _Sool_ also shows Allien exploring new territory: "Elphine" dips into some spaced-out funk, while "Frieda" could almost pass as a pop tune. Some intriguing new directions from Ellen Allien.
