Product Description

Steve Reich, a pioneer in minimalist and avant-garde composition, presents a captivating exploration of rhythm and texture in his 2005 album "Sextet / Six Marimbas." Released under the prestigious Nonesuch label, this 42-minute journey delves into the intricate layers of classical music, reimagined through Reich's distinctive lens. The album is divided into two main works: the five-movement "Sextet" and the mesmerizing "Six Marimbas." Each piece showcases Reich's signature style, characterized by repetitive patterns, phasing techniques, and a deep sense of groove. The "Sextet," performed by an ensemble of winds and strings, unfolds in a series of movements that build upon each other, creating a sense of continuous evolution. Meanwhile, "Six Marimbas" offers a unique sonic experience, with its interlocking rhythms and vibrant timbres. Reich's innovative approach to composition, combined with the precision and skill of the performers, makes this album a standout in his extensive discography. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Sextet / Six Marimbas" promises an engaging and thought-provoking listening experience.

  • Reich's Minimalist Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    zeizcyikm21 March 2024United States🇺🇸

I'm a huge fan of Steve Reich's minimalist compositions from the 70s, with "Music for 18 Musicians" standing out as a peak in his career and the minimalist genre as a whole. The tracks on this album share a similar vibe; it's like organic, ambient, pre-techno tunes that had a massive impact on repetitive music. Inspired by African drumming and gamelan, the marimbas here serve up both rhythm and melody. This music puts me in a chill state, perfect for focused listening or background reading. Fun fact: for a CD, it's got amazing dynamics, sounding like an analog recording that's been digitized without extra compression—no DDD recording here. I'd totally recommend it to anyone into this kind of music.
