This edition appears to be a tad more common, yet it matches the audio quality and mastering of the 1987 CD released by Combat. The dynamic range is well-preserved here. However, some musical details are lost compared to later CD releases, which is typical for albums from the '80s. This album by Death essentially defined death metal in 1987, but Possessed's "Seven Churches" from 1985 features a track titled "Death Metal." That album by Possessed was later recognized as a blend of death metal and thrash metal. Additionally, Sarcófago's "I.N.R.I." from 1987 includes a track called "Deathrash," which seems to be a misprint of death thrash, contributing to the development of this hybrid genre.
In the past year or so, I've picked up all except one of the Death reissues from Relapse, and holy shit, they all kick ass.
The production quality of this album is not great overall. The dynamic range is well-preserved in this version, however. That said, it lacks some of the musical details found on later CDs. But hey, that's to be expected from an old CD like this.
The audio quality is OUTSTANDING, but this album is an absolute mess. If you come across it for a bargain, go for it, but be aware that the production is lackluster and the final two tracks are missing lol Five stars for the sound, 1 star for letting this release hit the shelves.
